Policy 23 -- Shared Space

 

Purpose:  Movement of residents and visitors is overwhelmingly by foot on the shared roadway which serves also to connect off-road foot and bridleways that criss-cross the village.   Making this a shared space safe and enticing for all road users is essential for maintaining the fabric of the village. 

 

Policy:   Development proposals should respect the shared nature of the main route through the village (The Street) from the junction of Adams Lane through to the Harbour.

 

Proposals should:

  • Take opportunities to enhance the safety of the shared surface.
  • Make suitable provision for safe access and egress from development sites both during building works and when the development is in use
  • Hedges and trees should be retained
  • Surface treatments where an access joins the highway should be sympathetic to the locality
  • New signage or road markings must respect the character of the village and be appropriate but unobtrusive

 

The proposals in Appendix 7 referenced above form a set of possible future enhancements that can be taken forward when appropriate funding is available.
