Policy 9 -- Walberswick Conservation Area

 

Policy Purpose: The designation of the Conservation Area acknowledges the importance of the built environment within or affecting it. Consideration is given to the particular factors which will be referenced when considering proposals for development or others matters affecting the significance of the character of the area.

 

Proposals for development within the Conservation Area or within the setting of the Conservation Area must preserve or enhance the character or appearance of the Conservation Area and respect the particular features which contribute to its character and appearance, particularly those of local or national historic or architectural interest, as shown on the Conservation Area Map and List.

 

Particular regard must be given to the following:

  • Walberswick Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan
  • The effect of the proposal on the significance of a designated or non-designated heritage assets shown on the Neighbourhood Plan Heritage and Conservation Area Maps and List including both listed and unlisted heritage buildings
  • The overall layout of the settlement and its relationship with the National Landscape and extent of the local, national and international nature conservation designations.
  • The historic pattern of roads, footpaths, by-ways and open spaces that characterise the settlement and contribute to the established street scene
  • The mix of building types, designs, scale, height and massing
  • Roof lines and styles and any historic elevation features including windows, doors and balconies.
  • The use of locally distinctive building materials, styles and techniques
  • Significant landscape features including established trees and hedgerows, boundary treatments, ponds and open spaces
  • Existing views and vistas including views of the skyline and views into and out of the Conservation Area.

 

All proposals should identify opportunities for enhancements to the Conservation Area and should be supported by sufficiently detailed information to allow an informed assessment of any impacts.  

 

Outline planning applications for new buildings will not be acceptable in the Conservation Area, or on the boundaries of the village where there could be unacceptable impacts on the National Landscape.
