Much of what is written below is included in the 'May' posting from last year. However there are a couple of new catagories this year and some requirements in specific classes have been updated.
We hope these guidelines will be helpful when cross referenced with the schedule for the Show.
Fruit and Vegetable
- Potatoes- Wash gently, don't scrub. The skins should be intact.
- All varieties of Peas and Beans- Should be as uniform as possible and displayed with their calyx on.
- Chard- can be of any size or variety but try to make the leaves as uniform as possible.
- Carrots and Beetroot- clean carefully just to remove any dirt. Trim the leaves to about 5-7cm.
- Cucumber- leave 2-3cm of stem. It can be of any size but should be as straight as possible. If you have a really wonky one why not enter it in the Novelty vegetable class?!
- Onions and Shallots- Leave the skins on and just gently clean up if necessary. If you don't know about tying your onions or shallots the best way to learn is by watching a demo on You Tube! Double back the stems to about 5-7cm and wrap either twine or raffia around them. Cut the excess leaves off. Trim the roots to tidy them up.
- Garlic- Do not peel. Trim the tops to about 5-7cm.
- Chilli Peppers- leave the calyx attatched and make them as uniform as possible.
- Tomatoes- calyx attached and as uniform as possible in size and ripeness.
- Cherry Tomatoes- can be on or off the vine but if off the vine the calyx must still be attached. As uniform as possible in ripeness and size.
- Mixed Herbs- should be tied and labelled and not in flower. They can be displayed in a jar, jug or vase of water to prevent them from wilting.
- Rhubarb- Do not cut the stems, pull them. Clean gently if necessary. Trim the leaves to about 5cm.
Blackcurrants, Redcurrants and Whitecurrants- The word 'strig' is an horticultural term best interpreted as a 'string'- so the berries should be left as a strig on the stem and not displayed individually.
Harvey Memorial Trophy-This class is not only about quality but also presentation. All the varieties of veg, fruit and flowers must be home grown. Seven is the maximum number of different varieties you may enter but you can include as many items of that variety as you like. Remember that any foliage you may use as decoration counts as one variety each. The container can be of any size, for example, a crate or veg box, a trug, basket or a seed tray.
Cut Flowers, Indoor or Outdoor Pot Plants, David Webb Memorial Trophy- All entries in these catagories must be home grown, not necessarily from seed though. Bought in seedlings or cuttings are fine. The entries can be displayed in any container or vase of your choosing. In the pot plant catagories please check the sizes of the pots- no bigger than 30cm internal diameter.
Flower and Floral Arrangements- Entries into these classes can be purchased. Please do check that the size of your finished arrangement is as stipulated in the Schedule.
Culinary- A paper plate and cellophane bag will be provided on the day for each entry . However a plate, board or stand bought from home is acceptable for the cakes, bread and quiches if they are difficult to transfer.
Like last year, there are two classes for the cakes. One can be a 'show stopper' apple cake with as much decoration and as many tiers as you want. The other must be a two tiered iced apple cake but with no decoration. Both must not be larger then 20cm in diameter.
We have noticed a typo regarding the size of the quiche! It should read max 18-20cm. Don't forget to remove it from its tin/dish.
We have a new class this year, No 65, which requires fermentation. This year the challenge is Sauerkraut!
There has been an update on the requirements in the jams, lemon curd, marmalade, jellies, relish and chutney catagories. The only strict requirement for entry is that the jar must be clean and the lid must be new. New lids are easy to buy online (check the size) or at any of the local hardware shops. Please label clearly.
Liqueurs and Cordials can be displayed in any size bottle. Please label clearly.
Junior Classes- We are still struggling to get entries for this category. They are the only ones in the show that can be entered by people not resident in the village. So if you have family and friends staying or you know of someone who is holidaying in the village over the time of the show please persuade them to enter. We have made the classes very quick and easy to do so not huge amounts of time need be spent on them! The entries for the poster for next years show can be done in any medium including digital art.
If anyone has any queries or questions about the show please get in touch with us. We now have an Instagram page- walberswick.show- which will be updated with news and some of the committee are on Ciao.
Lastly, we hope that anyone entering the show for the first time last year enjoyed it and found it not to be the rather serious event that they had imagined. We really want to build on that so please tell anyone you know in the village about it and emphasise they do not have to have green fingers or be in the same league as Mary Berry to enter!
We really hope to see you on July 19th at the Village Hall- Entries to be dropped off between 9.30 and 10.45. Doors will reopen at 3 for the prize-giving and we will be there until 4.30 selling raffle tickets and serving tea and cake.
